# Maxim Mikhailov

Software Engineer · Helsinki, Finland

Good software starts with understanding people.

I build web and mobile applications, but my work often starts long before the first line of code. I enjoy turning conversations into ideas, ideas into designs, and designs into working software.

## Work

Software Engineer at [ALMACO Group](https://www.almaco.cc/digital-solutions/), January 2024–present.

At ALMACO, I build internal and customer-facing software for the marine industry. It helps people keep track of equipment aboard vessels, follow project progress, and handle customer requests.

I also work on integrations between business and data systems and build AI-powered solutions to automate routine tasks. More recently, I’ve been developing inspection tools for vessels and shipyards.

### Responsibilities

- Stakeholder communication and requirements gathering
- Project planning and coordination
- UI/UX design and prototyping
- Software architecture and technical decisions
- Frontend, backend, and mobile development
- Testing, debugging, and quality assurance
- Cloud infrastructure and deployment
- Maintaining and improving existing systems

### Work examples

- **Equipment and project applications:** Internal and customer-facing applications with digital inventories of equipment aboard vessels and project progress tracking for the marine industry.
- **Sales tools and AI automation:** A digital tool for the sales team that helps process customer requests up to 10 times faster. Other work includes adopting AI solutions to automate routine tasks.
- **Inspection interfaces:** Web interfaces for technical drawings and inspection workflows aboard vessels and in shipyards, including environments with unreliable connectivity.
- **Offline Android applications:** Offline-first Android apps for recording inspection findings and attachments, with synchronization between devices and the cloud.
- **Review and reporting:** Inspection features including customer sign-off, change histories, and automatic PDF reports.
- **Enterprise and data integrations:** Application integrations with Microsoft Dynamics 365, and data processing and integration workflows involving Snowflake and Qlik.

## Toolkit

React, TypeScript, Next.js, Kotlin, Expo / React Native, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Docker, AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Qlik, Vite, tRPC.

### Technology context

- **Web and full-stack development:** React, TypeScript, Next.js, Vite, tRPC, Node.js. Responsive web applications, interface design, and API development.
- **Mobile development:** Kotlin, Expo / React Native. Native Android development and cross-platform mobile applications.
- **Backend and infrastructure:** PostgreSQL, Docker, AWS, Azure. Application data storage, cloud infrastructure, and deployment.
- **Data and enterprise systems:** Microsoft Dynamics 365, Snowflake, Qlik. ERP integrations, data pipelines, data processing, and business intelligence.
- **Daily AI development tools:** OpenAI Codex, Claude Code. Agentic coding workflows and AI-assisted software implementation.

## How I work

I believe coding agents are the future of software engineering. I use Codex and Claude Code daily, delegating routine coding tasks so I can spend more time on architecture, design, and conversations with the people I’m building for.

## Technical interests

I use Go and Rust in personal projects and technical experimentation. Other interests include AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP), developer tools, self-hosting, and automation.

## Personal background

Originally from St. Petersburg, I moved to Finland to study programming in Åland, then settled in Helsinki.

I speak Russian and English and am learning Finnish and Swedish.

I’m curious about technology, science, history, and politics. Outside work, I enjoy city and nature walks, birdwatching, playing guitar and ukulele, and Finnish sauna. I’ve also started learning golf.

## Connect

I’m not actively looking for new opportunities at the moment, but I’m happy to connect and stay in touch.
